Maurice Bair was born in Portland, Oregon, on September 24th, 1 894. With his parents, he came to Goldfield about the year 1 907 and was associated with his father and brother in the hardware business under the firm name of Bair & Son. He was a quiet, unassuming lad and devoted most of his spare time to the study of mechanics. It is said by neighbors of the deceased that his devotion and love for his mother and that he was strictly a homeboy.
He entered the Service from Goldfield, Esmeralda County, Nevada, on October 6, 1917, going into the 34th Battalion, 166th Depot Brigade, Camp Lewis, Washington. Thereafter he served in Battery E, 348th Field Artillery, 91st Division to November 10, 1917; in Company K, 164th Infantry, 41st Division until January 9, 1918.
With this Division, he went overseas on December 15, 1917. On the 9th of January 1918, he entered Company I, 16th Infantry, 1st Division, and served with them in the Toul Sector until April 2, 1918; in the Montdidier Sector from April 25th to May_x000d_
28th; in the Battle of Cantigny and Counter-Offensive from May 28 to July 7th; in the Allied Offensive of the Mame Sector at Berzy-le-Sec, from July 18th to July 22nd, where he was mortally wounded.
His brother, Isle, who was also in the Army happened to be in Paris at the time the battle took place. Knowing that his brother’s regiment was in the fighting and hearing that the wounded were being brought to Paris he made the rounds of the hospitals and found his brother mortally wounded.
In a few hours, he passed away in his brother’s arms saying, “Tell mother I made a brave fight.” (July 23, 1918.)
He is survived by his parents, Wolf and Sarah Bair, of San Francisco, California; by two brothers, Sam Bair of San Francisco and Isle Bair, Los Angeles, California; and, by a sister, Mrs. M. S. Levy, 223 8th Avenue, San Francisco, California.
